Abstract
In Battambang province, Cambodia, a community-driven initiative was launched to promote sustainable land use and improve livelihoods for over 100 families across two districts. Through collaboration with local authorities, government line agencies, and NGOs, the project focused on capacity building, gender mainstreaming, and inclusive livelihood development. Central to the effort was the evolution of a savings group into a community-led social micro-insurance scheme, initially benefiting 60 elderly women and men. By the time of external evaluation, the number of members had grown to 87, with interest expanding to neighbouring villages. Regular follow-up and local advocacy have helped ensure ongoing monitoring and integration into local governance structures.
The project achieved notable results in both environmental awareness and practical outcomes. Nearly all targeted households adopted home gardening and agro-based activities, with 85 families now raising chickens—exceeding original targets. Two demonstration farms were established, and all beneficiary households received water filters, alongside local institutions. Tree planting efforts at the Samaki School exceeded targets, and capacity-building workshops equipped local partners with organisational and project management skills. The case study demonstrates how integrated, locally anchored approaches can foster sustainable development and community resilience.
