STEI is dedicated to empowering communities in South East Asia to build resilience against the growing threats of climate change and natural disasters. With a focus on sustainable development, gender equality, and disaster risk reduction (DRR), we collaborates with local authorities, communities, and national stakeholders to create a safer and more adaptive environment for vulnerable populations.
Overview
Cambodia is highly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change and natural disasters, including flooding, droughts, and cyclones. These hazards exacerbate existing challenges such as poverty, food insecurity, and damage to infrastructure, disproportionately affecting marginalised communities, particularly women and children. Moreover, climate-induced disasters threaten agricultural production, water resources, and biodiversity, putting at risk the livelihoods of millions who depend on natural resources for survival. There is an urgent need for effective disaster risk reduction strategies and capacity-building initiatives to protect communities and promote sustainable development.
What We Do
STEI works to mitigate the impacts of disasters and climate change by implementing community-based disaster risk management (CBDRM) programs, focusing on both adaptation and resilience-building. We prioritize gender equality in all our initiatives, ensuring that women and children play key roles in disaster risk reduction efforts. Our activities include:
Capacity Building: Providing training and resources to local authorities and communities, particularly vulnerable groups, to enhance their disaster preparedness and response capabilities.
Policy Advocacy: Supporting the development and implementation of gender-responsive disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation policies, with an emphasis on local participation and empowerment.
Community Resilience: Promoting sustainable livelihoods through climate-smart agriculture, water management, and natural resource conservation, helping communities to better cope with the effects of climate change.
Networking: Engaging with national and international networks to share knowledge, foster collaboration, and strengthen disaster risk reduction efforts across Cambodia.
Through these initiatives, STEC aims to build a disaster-resilient Cambodia, where communities are well-prepared to face the challenges posed by climate change and natural hazards, while ensuring the protection of vulnerable populations.
