Save the Earth International protects Cambodia’s marine ecosystems through conservation, sustainable fisheries, and community resilience efforts. By creating marine protected areas and building community capacity, the organization fosters a sustainable approach to marine resource management. Key initiatives include safeguarding endangered species like dolphins and seahorses, establishing no-fishing zones, and supporting national conservation policies against illegal fishing. Public support enables vital data collection and conservation efforts, helping secure marine biodiversity and livelihoods for local communities reliant on the ocean.
Overview
Save the Earth International is dedicated to preserving Cambodia’s marine ecosystems through a multi-faceted conservation program that addresses biodiversity protection, sustainable fisheries, and community resilience. Building on years of environmental advocacy and collaboration, Save the Earth International is working with local communities, fishers, government agencies, and NGOs to foster a sustainable approach to marine resource management. The cornerstone of this program is the establishment of marine protected areas, where careful zoning supports biodiversity, sustainable fishing, and eco-tourism. This approach not only conserves precious marine habitats but also bolsters livelihoods and enhances food security for the communities that depend on the ocean.
In addition to conservation, Save the Earth International focuses on capacity building within local communities. Through training sessions, awareness campaigns, and hands-on involvement in conservation activities, community members are empowered to actively participate in protecting their coastal ecosystems. We place a strong emphasis on community-led resource management, which includes identifying critical fishing grounds and establishing no-fishing zones. These zones serve as safe havens for marine species, allowing habitats to recover from overfishing and other destructive practices, and promoting a sustainable balance between conservation and livelihood needs.
A key focus of the program is protecting endangered species within Cambodia’s waters. Save the Earth International works on the ground with communities to safeguard species such as Indo-Pacific humpback dolphins, bottlenose dolphins, Irrawaddy dolphins and seahorses, which are under threat from illegal fishing and trade for traditional medicine. By conducting trade surveys, monitoring populations, and launching social awareness campaigns, the organization aims to mitigate these pressures and instill pride and stewardship for these iconic marine creatures.
Furthermore, Save the Earth International is contributing to national conservation policy by supporting the government in creating action plans to combat illegal fishing, which poses a significant threat to marine biodiversity and sustainability. Through these collaborative efforts, the organization is creating a comprehensive conservation model that not only protects Cambodia’s marine ecosystems but also paves the way for a resilient future for local communities.
